Just a few things:

November 29th, 2011

Greeting Affiliates!

Throughout the semester I’ve taken note of several different questions and situations which have been brought to my attention on more than one occasion. I think now is a good time to address these topics so that you all can benefit from the answers.  Please read!

  1. Bible College is often a place of change and transition.  If any of your administrative staff moves on and their position is filled by someone new, it’s important that you notify us, especially about new contact information so that we can add you to our group e-mail list.
  2. As an affiliate, it is your responsibility to keep yourself up-to-date with new CCBC policies.  We will do our part by posting any new policies or changes to existing policies on the Affiliate’s Website.
  3. If your campus is closing, please notify us so that we can make the necessary changes on our end.
  4. If your campus is planning on closing, please keep in mind that you will remain responsible for students’ records.  The church becomes custodian of records and must be able to produce transcripts.  This is a very important service to provide former students who, down the road, may wish to transfer credit to other institutions or colleges (See the Affiliate Handbook pg. 15).
  5. For student grad-packets, please send official transcripts to Murrieta in the original, sealed envelope.  Please do not open a student’s official transcripts and then send us a copy in another envelope.  If transcripts are not received in the original sealed envelope, they will be considered unofficial.

Class Credit: Policy Enforcement

October 4th, 2011
Hello Affiliates!
I’m sure most of you have already begun planning for next semester, as you do it is important that you keep in mind the following:
For the Spring 2012 semester, please be sure to schedule enough class time–15 hours in class for each credit. This is the universal meaning of a “semester credit”, and we all want to be honest in the way we issue credits. Here at Murrieta we recently realized our error and corrected it by adding a few minutes onto the end of each class session to make up for the fact that our classes only met 14 times. So our 2-credit classes now meet 14 times for 2 hours and 10 minutes, and our 3-credit classes meet 14 times for 3 hours and 15 minutes. We chose this option rather than adding a week to our semester. A ten-minute break is allowed for every hour of instruction time.
We thank you for your cooperation in this matter!

Grad-Fee Update

September 8th, 2011

Attention Affiliates!   I have some good news for you and students, especially as you are preparing your graduate packets which should be postmarked by next Friday.  Grad-Fees are no longer required!  So please, do not include a $50 check with your graduate packets.

A Few Financial FAQs

January 25th, 2011

A new director recently took the helm of one of the Affiliates. After reading through the Affiliate Campus Handbook, he had some really good questions. We thought others might be wondering about some of the same things, so we’ve posted them here with our responses (in italics). Feel free to add to the conversation by commenting below.

1.   Fees for Affiliate students seeking a CCBC degree are $25.00, has that changed? The fee is still $25 per semester for each student taking any class for credit at your campus. No fee needs to be submitted for your audit students.

2.   Please verify where does the money go and for what specifically? The fee is used to help cover CCBC’s (Murrieta) cost of employing a full time Affiliate Campus Registrar, who coordinates the program on our end. Affiliate campuses have a unique relationship with CCBC that allows 60 credits to be transferred instead of only 12 like other schools. These 60 can include core classes. Since such a huge percentage of CCBC’s degree program can be completed at Affiliates, someone here has to review all the syllabi for consistency with the CCBC program, evaluate semester and grad packets, file teacher information, enter all the data for the transferred courses, communicate with all the Affiliates, meet with and help our students as they plan to study at Affiliates, speak with those who want to start new campuses, etc. At this point, the fees submitted by the Affiliates do not fully cover CCBC’s costs of offering and maintaining the Affiliate program. However, we don’t plan to increase the fees. The Affiliates need to do their part by collecting and submitting the fees to help cover the cost, if they see value in being affiliated with CCBC. Hopefully the value of the affiliation exceeds the cost of submitting the fees, but that’s a question each campus must decide for itself.

3.   We are free to charge what we want for Audit students? Yes, you are free to set all of your own tuition rates, including audit.

4.   Fees for taking courses from CCBC (and I assume that means on-line courses for those of us in Colorado) have what fee structure? CCBC’s tuition is $100 per credit. Audit students pay $100 per course. The same rates apply to Distance Learning courses.

5.   I also assume that if a student desired to take more than 20 course credits from CCBC as opposed to the Affiliate they could do so. Main campus online fees would be the same as for the mandatory 20 credits? Yes, that is correct.

6.   I also assume that CCBC credits are not transferable to other Spiritual institutions, say Dallas Theological Seminary? Or is that a case by case situation depending on the student and the institution? Other institutions will need transcripts from CCBC and any Affiliates the student has attended. Many seminaries have accepted students with CCBC’s Bachelor of Biblical Studies into their Masters programs, and many Christian colleges have accepted CCBC credits in transfer. It is always up to the Registrar at each institution, and it’s usually case-by-case. Several colleges and seminaries have made agreements to accept credits or degrees from CCBC, but we can’t assume that these agreements automatically extend to the Affiliates as well. We all need to be careful to avoid misrepresentation on this point, since we may end up being guilty of ‘over-promising’ and ‘under-delivering’.

Reminder about 4th Semester Students

December 23rd, 2010

Dear Friends,

As you communicate with students before the spring 2011 semester, please remember to inform them that CCBC (Murrieta) is only able to grant degrees to students who have completed at least 20 units at the Murrieta Hot Springs campus or through CCBC’s Distance Learning department. We do not intend for this to discourage students from attending your campus for their fourth semester. This is a legal limitation for us, and we rely on you to pass this information along to these students before they finalize plans for their fourth semester, since we have way to communicate directly with them. Also, students could certainly do a fifth semester through Murrieta if they want a degree in the name of “Calvary Chapel Bible College”. Back in the Twin Peaks days, the program normally took six semesters! Of course, most students plan to complete it in four semesters, and wouldn’t be too pleased to find out–in the middle of what they thought was their last semester–that they need another one! This happened with several students at Affiliates this semester, and it was a very stressful situation for everyone involved.

The ability for students to study the Word while experiencing different cultures and fellowship with believers all over the world is an amazing opportunity made possible by the relationship between all of the Bible Colleges. We regularly pray that the Lord would bless your ministry, and we thank you for serving the students in this way, by presenting all of the information they need up front. If you have concerns or ideas on how our relationship can improve, please do not hesitate to share those thoughts with us. You all know we don’t always get things right here at the Murrieta campus, and your communication does a lot to help. Leaving comments below a post like this one could start a fruitful discussion.

May the Light of the World be with you, especially as we celebrate his birth this Christmas season.
